MJ

I think it would be fair to say that it didn't go unnoticed that just as I was posting my first icon piece about a female icon arguably the most famous man in the world passed away.

Oh the irony.

However it would be remiss of me to not mention Michael Jackson today. There were moments of genius from the last 45 years of entertaining the world that have been, sadly, tarnished since. Part of this is down to Jackson himself, the worst case of getting caught up in your own myth ever (?) and partly it's down to the cult of celebrity that we have all descended into. Of course the child molestation charges he faced did nothing to help the way the world viewed him either but I have no wish to write about those.

Was I a fan? In a word no. I do not possess any Jackson albums. This is something that at some point I will rectify. But that doesn't mean that I don't like some of his songs, I guess there's just no resonance there for me. I can remember the hyperbole that surrounded the release of Thriller, and I did get quite into the song of the same name, although I think I was more impressed by Vincent Price's spoken word segment right at the end than the actual song.

Clearly quite a lot of people are quite upset. I get that. He was an innovator in many ways and maybe at some point there will be an Icon post about Michael Jackson, but I'm not doing one because of yesterdays events and next week will still be week two of the female icon series. I hope that's cool with you all.
