It was always going to be a close call. Shit dragons. Or great dragons. In the end the little fellas (Viserion, Rhaegal and Drogon don't ya know) were suitably small and shrill, but the CGI did a good job of delivering believable dragons and the actors did their bit: looking suitably awe struck.
Game of Thrones has been a weird series to watch, at times scenes were lifted straight from the books at others they just sort of made that shit right up. It worked though. Somehow they crammed all eight hundred or so pages into a ten episode series and with a bit of luck they'll get an extended run for A Clash of Kings, because believe me kids this stuff is about to get way more complicated.
I've had a little look around the web at the reaction online and most people seem to be pretty pleased with the way the dragons turned out (they get cooler) and a bit gutted about how much the direwolves have been down played (they're cooler than the dragons in the books). Personally, yeah the direwolves thing is a shame, but I can see how they might be able to do them later on, without resorting to CGI. The series isn't gonna live and die by how cool the wolves look. It could have seriously died if the baby dragons had been shit.
I'm putting my Ice and Fire head back in it's box for now before Ads kills me. It was a fuck load better than Glee though. End of.

A Song of Fire and Ice
I don't write about books much. This is mainly because I am on Twitter and reading books went out the window a while ago.
However, before Twitter, around four years ago, sometime after the PS3 and post the collapse of another relationship, I got lent A Game of Thrones the first of George RR Martins' A Song of Fire and Ice opus. It blew my tiny mind and I read all five books (technically four, one is split in two) very very quickly.
It's fantasy fiction, Tolkienesque, but with the 'fantasy' played down and the characters writ large. It's violent, shocking, sad, sexy as fuck and filled to the brim with sub plots and intrigue. There are also dragons. Or were. And a wall. A fucking massive wall, made of ice.
Tonight HBO's TV version airs in the UK on Sky Atlantic. It's either going to be a massive cluster fuck of awful or it's going to nail it and be must watch TV. There will be no middle ground. The books are hallowed ground for me and I just hope that they capture the magic of it all.
If you've not read the books and are going to watch tonight one word of warning. Don't get to attached to anyone.
The trailer, for what it's worth, has made it look very promising.
And if it is a bit shit the next book is out in July..... apparently.

Game of Thrones - Trailer
We see the wall. Can not wait for this, fact. It all looks pretty much right too.
Cheers to liveforfims.com for the heads up.
In other news A Dance With Dragons has finally been announced for a July release. Only a six year wait, thanks George.

Caravan of Love
TV shows have a many and varied affect on your average Twitter user.
Firstly there are those that watch TV and don't tweet while watching. Fair enough.
Secondly there are those that watch the program and tweet all the way through. (Me.)
Thirdly there are those that watch something else but choose to tweet about the comments everyone else is making about the other program.
Fourthly there are those that live in another country and probably have more important things to worry about, like floods and that.
My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding was great TV, very funny (and slightly disturbing in parts) and made to be that way. You can argue all you want about the rights and wrongs of making the program but it made for an intriguing evening of tweets. Many many tweeters were watching. It was like an X-Factor night and for me, that's when Twitter can truly shine. Why? Ok let me quantify it a bit. I hate the music of X-Factor, hate the processed, bollocking shites that are labelled as 'artists' that it spawns. However, the piss taking tweets make watching it an absolute must. I watch a TV program because Twitter makes it something else entirely. Shoot me. On Oxford Street.
Now last night was a bit different but I think it tapped into the same thing for many people, that utter joy of feeling a bit better than the loons on your telly box. And that came out in the tweets. But... and here's where it gets tricky, many of the tweets were very very funny. But suddenly the mood changed and there were accusations of racism, people jumping to others defence, others getting hugely upset at being called a racist and all of it felt like a huge misunderstanding. Mainly because people weren't watching the show and took tweets way out of context. I've read all day about rows, DM's of an unpleasant nature and unfollows. Such a pity.
I won't deal with the free speech thing today, I'll save that for my two year anniversary on Twitter but honestly, I've had issues with people on Twitter in the past and what they've typed and been vocal about it. I've made mistakes on there too. Been too open, too honest. Now I tend to take a break when the real world invades too much. That's been a learning curve for me but I'm sure I'll fuck up again. I realised a while back that we all really do see Twitter very differently. That every single timeline is different and that more than anything else will influence how you view it, feel about it and whether you enjoy it. It's not about being a sheep and just accepting the worst of Twitter but is about recognising that. And when you're all sat there watching the same TV show and seeing some truly abhorrent racism (on the program) and some equally uncomfortable male/female courting dynamics it's incredibly hard to not get involved in the conversations and dark humour. And that, frankly, isn't anywhere near the big deal that it's been painted as.
The only time I ever get annoyed by something I see on Twitter these days is when someone I like is made to feel uncomfortable, directly or indirectly, and to be honest a lot of the attacking last night on both sides started to feel like that.
I used to see Twitter like a giant hippy commune. It isn't that at all. It's just a fuck off big sofa with us all arguing over the TV remote.
Same time next week yeah?

Misfits
Series two of Misfits started last night and was an absolute joy. The characters are still as believable as ever, the acting wonderful and utterly compelling. It's also very funny. The Inbetweeners crossed with Buffy.
The story of the five kids with special powers and their mundane lives filled with murder (mostly ones they've been involved in) and other folk with mystery abilities, is dark and full of weight but the dialogue is short sharp and hilarious.
If you're not watching it you should be, even if it's just for the music which is pure class throughout. The first season left this with a lot to live up to, but it did, big time. After a day yesterday of not feeling particularly proud to be British (Twitter Joke Trial and 'student' protesters) at least some of our more creative minds have delivered a TV show that shines. And it's not a reality TV show. Thank fuck for that.
The real stuff is on my on my Posterous, which is no longer locked up. Go have a read. It just didn't feel right to put it here.

Big Brother and Twitter
Once in while twitter springs into life and reminds me of why I loved it so much in the first place. Love or loathe Big Brother (and I know many of you loathe it) twitter was a joy last night.
Twitter lends itself to events, the first televised election debate between the party leaders was a classic example of that, as was the whole Roal Moat thing. Last night the build up was slow, the actual Big Brother the forerunner to the main event as far as twitter was concerned.
I won't bore you by repeating tweets but the second Josie won and Celeb Big Brother started in earnest, my timeline started to fill with gag after gag. Ok, I love the interaction on twitter but when something like that is happening it's easy to get caught up in it all, particularly the speed that some were tweeting at. For a solid two hours twitter was at it's very best and a bloody hilarious cluster fuck of joke telling.
We love to hate Big Brother but the final series has been blessed with a few great characters that have saved it from mediocrity and the winner, Josie, seems like a really decent, genuine lass from Bristol. Her relationship with John James...? Well I'll leave @domcoke to sum that up....
'I find the whole Josie and John James thing incredibly melancholy. It makes me sad. It's like watching Josie free-falling to the ground.'

Lost - The End
**SPOILER FREE**
I'll review the final season once the last episode has aired in the UK at a normal time to give those of you who haven't watched it yet a chance to catch up. I got up at 4:30 this morning and made a cup of tea, settled down on the most comfortable sofa in the world and watched two and a half hours of Lost. The last two and a half hours of Lost ever.

Lost... nearly done.
It's so close to finishing and by the time this post gets published you will have all watched the penultimate episode. Hopefully. If you haven't I'd strongly recommend not hitting the 'read the rest' button.
SPOILER ALERT!

All its teeth fell out into my mouth and gave me scurvy.
That's right, it's Yahtzee again. He really is back on a roll, this review for Dark Void is him at his wonderful sneering best.
A little heads up, from tomorrow I'm going to start using the 'read more'* button thingamy on my posts, so that all of them look about the same size and posts don't get completely lost every day. We'll try it and see how it goes. So for example...
Today I watched some Lost... wanna hear more...? (No spoiler, promise.) And you'll be able to hit the read more button to read the rest of the post. Now I did try this with tonight's post but it doesn't really work when a video is embedded as the video disappears from the front end and only reappears when the you click 'read more'. On the plus side I've now set up a 'test' blog, only viewable by me, where I can test stuff like that.
Anyway....
Anyway....
*I have no idea what will happen when this posts on the facebook fan page thingy if you're reading this on there.
I've only watched the first half of episode one as the link I got sent for the (whisper it) torrent was only for the first bit. That downloaded in about 40 minutes and while I was watching I started to download part two. At time of writing, about three hours later, it is still downloading. Brilliant.
Those who've been reading for a while will know that I'm a huge fan of the show and have been an avid viewer since the start. So what did I make of the first 45 minutes of the final season?
Classic Lost to be honest. Drama and head fuck. In spades. If you already love the show, you'll love it. You'll especially love... well I'll let you see for yourself.
Lost airs in the UK this Friday (05.02.10) at 9pm.

C-Bomb
When a new TV series launches there's always hype and there has been a fair bit about Glee
. But when a new series drops a C-Bomb in the first few minutes, about one minute past nine on a Monday night, you damn well know that this might be aces.
For a series set in a high school it's also a pretty brave opening. Also within the first five minutes it's pretty clear that 'Sue', played by Jane Lynch, is gonna become a pretty iconic character.
But anyway there was a C-Bomb. I think I'm in love.*
The heating? Don't ask. It's not fixed. I got grumpy, was mean to AT (sorry dude) and have to wait for a part to be ordered.
*There also seems to be a very good script and I've laughed out loud at other stuff besides the C-Bomb. Honest.
Ok lil amendment to tonight's post. After some checking from @theboycheese it turns out I miss heard the C-Bomb. Post stays up though cause Glee is ace.
For the record what was actually said was 'budget cuts' which I miss heard as 'bunch of c***'. Gettin' old ain't I. 8)

Catch up time.
We better start with Yahtzee who really likes the new game WET... of course he doesn't really. He hates it and uses 'colourful language' to describe his feelings. You know the rules by now kids. 'If you don't like the 'bad' words don't watch.' And almost certainly don't buy WET. (This week sees a true return to form for Yahtzee so even if you hate games and bad language you may chuckle.)
Tomorrow I should have my dirty little mitts on Uncharted 2. I was going to pop into town today but finally tweetathon caught up with me and I fell asleep just after Sunderland's new hot shot striker, A. Balloon, netted against Liverpool. I kid you not.
The Jane Moir story has got my heckles up of course. Her awful piece for yesterdays Daily Mail has rightly made an awful lot of people very angry. Her opinions about Stephen Gately's death have been widely reported and I don't need to go into details here. If you want to know how I feel read Charlie Brooker's comments here, they just about sum my feelings up. She should lose her job but I also strongly believe that people should stop buying the Mail. So you know, stop buying such a vile paper people.
It was also another great example of Social Networking sites showing their power although twitter certainly lends itself better to this kind of thing better than facebook.
Balloons have featured highly this week haven't they? Great TV the other night as one traversed across America supposedly with a six year old inside. When it landed and the 'rescuers' started hacking at it with what appeared to be pitch forks I'm sure I wasn't alone in thinking, 'WTF are they doing?!!!' But clearly once the thing was down it was obvious he wasn't inside. A hoax then? Maybe. Entertaining though? Oh yes.
So that was the week that was. One of the best of my life slightly spoilt by one balloon but balanced back out by another. You couldn't make it up.

Bea
I'm not supposed to like Big Brother any more. I gave up on it for about three years after it seemed to descend into 'lets find the weirdest people we can,' rather than finding truly interesting characters to bring it to life.
Someone must have realised because this year the house has been a very interesting place to visit every night. But I can't help but wonder if last night we lost one of the best house mates ever. Bea.
Mental, indescribably destructive, manipulative, and never ever wrong but she thinks she's a sweet natured hippy. I went out with someone like this once for a year (RW gossip fans) and it was a nightmare.
At first I really liked her (Bea). She seemed smart and clever, hot too. But she turned. Big time.
And that's why it got interesting. Watching someone slowly but surely make everything completely about themselves, dominate every conversation and piss everyone else off was just a joy to watch. Freddie, bless him, was completely smitten with her to start with. I guess he just did what we all did at the beginning and got sucked in by a pretty face and a confident girl. But when she bit, man did she bite. Poor Freddie was crushed. After he got evicted she spent this week turning on everyone else. Marcus got it, David (surely next out) got it and even Rodrigo got a smack down. She was a walking tornado in the house, brilliantly bonkers, but quite possibly single for the rest of her life. We're all terrified of her.
So Bea, we'll miss you. You were mental, but shit love, you were great TV.
I completely blame twitter for my Big Brother obsession, in particular @domcoke.
